Bishop's Guild History

Bishop's Guild began as an organization for social contact among young Catholic women. Bishop Newell agreed to sponsor the group, and the first general meeting was held May 13, 1953 at St. Joseph's Hall. Ellen Crowley was elected first president and Our Lady of Lourdes became the patroness. Meetings were scheduled the second Thursday of the month, September-May. The obectives for the new group were as follows:

- to serve as a medium through which Catholic women can further their personal understanding of Catholicism;

- to inform members of current matters relating to Catholicism; and

- to promote spirituality among members. Programs, special events, and mothly spiritual development talks are planned to meet these objectives.

Today's membership with the Bishop's Guild provides Bishop Ricken with prayers of intercession, financial, and social assistance each year.
