Marriage is the intimate, exclusive, indissoluble communion of life and love entered by man and woman at the design of the Creator for the purposes of their own good and the procreation and education of children; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.
Congratulations on your engagement. It gives all of us at the Cathedral great joy to see and to share in your love for each other and your commitment to prepare for a life lived together in His holy sacrament.
The Cathedral of St. Mary and the Diocese of Cheyenne have a preparation program that ordinarily lasts a minimum of six (6) months. It is a time for you to confirm and finalize your decision to marry. To assist the two of you in this endeavor, we provide the following:
FOCCUS – For Open Couple Communication and Understanding Skills
FOCCUS is an instrument used to help you discuss together the many aspects of Christian married life, e.g. your value judgments, expectations of married life and parenting, your expectations of each other, your hopes for growth and change, etc. During these sessions you will also have the time needed to plan your wedding liturgy with the help of the priest or deacon, the parish music director, and marriage coordinator. It is critical to keep in mind that while this is your wedding, it is also a wider celebration for those who gather with you and the entire Catholic Church community here at the Cathedral.
All Couples prepared in the Catholic Church for marriage have necessary documentation that must be collected before the ceremony takes place. The preparing priest, deacon, or pastoral minister will assist you in this matter as well. These documents include:
Proof of Baptism:
If you are Catholic, we must have a current baptismal certificate. That is a certificate issued within six months of your anticipated wedding date. Please provide the marriage coordinator with a current certificate or the name and place of the church of your baptism. For non-Catholic Christians, a photocopy of the baptismal certificate will be sufficient.
Proof of Confirmation:
This may be included on the back of the baptismal certificate. If not, you will need to provide evidence of your confirmation. Catholics are to be confirmed prior to being married, unless it poses a serious difficulty. In such cases, confirmation may be deferred until soon after the marriage. Contact the parish office for more information on Confirmation Preparation.
Prenuptial Investigation: A brief interview to collect biographical information.
Freedom to Marry Testimonies: Statements from your parents or other close relatives concerning your marital status and freedom to marry.
Dispensations, Permissions, and other documents: If they are necessary, the priest, deacon, or pastoral minister will be happy to explain the reason these documents are essential and will help collect them.
Participation in a marriage preparation program is required for all couples preparing for marriage in the Diocese of Cheyenne. Our program currently includes:
1. Natural Family Planning: A full course in NFP is not only a requirement but an important part of your marriage preparation. It is a healthy and very effective way to plan for children. NFP builds excellent communication skills between couples, naturally drawing you closer together.
Along with the priest or deacon, the parish music director and the marriage coordinator will help you plan your wedding liturgy.
Although participation in each aspect of the program is required, it gives you the opportunity to learn from the teams' own experience about what marriage is and how to form a lasting and enriching relationship. They will also share the Church's expectations of you as husband and wife, mother and father.

The Apache Wedding Benediction
Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other.
Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no more loneliness.
Now you are two Persons, but there is only one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling to enter into the days of your life together.
May your days be good and long upon the earth.
And may the peace of God go with you always.
