The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove challenges us to be alert in the words of the Gospel Acclamation verse for the Transfiguration of the Lord:
This is my beloved Son, listen to Him (Matthew 17:5c) Being alert was the message Jesus relayed to Peter, James and his brother, John in the Cycle A gospel for this weekend as he leads them up a high mountain to be transfigured. (Matthew 17:1-9) Sometimes, we need a wake up call as we go forward in our Christian journey. Sometimes these wake-up calls come when we least expect them. Our God is full of surprises. How do we welcome these surprises in our lives? Are we ready for them? Do we fret and pine? We should not fear what the future holds but confront it head on.
As we continue in Ordinary Time, Saint Peter’s voice should resonate in our hearts as he reminds us in the second reading, “…we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your heart.” (2 Peter: 1:16-19)
