“….For he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed.” (Luke 1:48) Humility and Trust in the Lord As we continue to reflect on the Magnificat (the Canticle of Mary) during October, consider how Mary exemplified humility and trust in the Lord. Early in life, Mary vowed to remain a virgin. The angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she was to become the mother of our Savior. What thoughts and questions must have raced through her mind. What would the community, her parents and Joseph think and say about this? Her only question to Gabriel was, "How can this be since I know not man?" The angel told her this would happen through the power of the Holy Spirit. She willingly and humbly accepted by putting complete trust in God's will. Because of this, Mary is recognized as “lowly servant” and is the model for Christian discipleship. Echoing Mary's words in the Magnificat, all of us have been truly blessed by our baptism, to sing God's praises, give Him honor and glory, and spread His wondrous deeds to evangelize others. Let us follow her example by trusting that God will supply the words we need to "Tell the Good News" (the sending forth hymn on this 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time). Psalm 96: Give the Lord glory and honor. Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all you lands. Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.
