“Be Thou My Vision” fourth verse Reflection Missa Bersabe The fourth verse of “Be Thou My Vision” by Mary E. Byrne, in my opinion, is about devotion to God. The fourth verse starts out with, “High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun!” These lines of the verse are praising God who is the “High King of heaven,” and shows the longing to reach the joys of heaven. I learned from my Catholic Doctrine class on “SetonOnline” that through a “’face-to-face" vision of God” called the Beatific Vision, the souls of the just may find perfect happiness. It is a special grace that God grants to those who have persevered in holiness and are in the state of grace when they die, which brings us back to the first line with “my victory won.” Having kept the faith and “won”, the next line shows that they long to attain the perfect happiness that only God can give with, “May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’n’s Sun!” The next two lines of the verse are, “Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O ruler of all.” These lines show that no matter what happens, they still devote themselves to God. In conclusion, the fourth verse of “Be Thou My Vision” is about devotion to God and the longing for the perfect happiness of Heaven.
