Luke 8:15 is our Gospel Acclamation for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the cantor will sing:
“Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance.”
The Church Fathers spoke often about preparing our hearts to receive the Word of God. They also emphasized the willingness to embrace the teachings of Christ. St. Cyril of Alexandria spoke of cultivating the right environment to foster the growth of the Word.
St. John Chrysostom taught to beware of the activity of the Devil in snatching away the Word that dwells in our hearts. By remembering and reflecting on Christ’s words and actions will be our hope in enduring trials.
When we make an intentional effort to be open to the Word, we can be more willing to do good in our dealings with others. When we take time to be with our Lord, we will learn to be more hospitable to others and will see the fruits of our efforts.
