http://bit.ly/31TldzQ What is the Good News? According to Psalm 117:1, 2, The Good News is that our God will always remain faithful to His promise. Our God will not abandon us, even when we fail. He will remain “steadfast” in his kindness toward us and He will remain faithful to us forever. This sounds a lot like the covenant made between a husband and wife in matrimony. In a real sense God is saying, “I will be your God, and you shall be my people”. Through baptism and confirmation, we enter most deeply into a covenant with God. We are intimately connected to Him when we receive the Real Presence in the Eucharist. Indeed, Christ truly becomes present through the calling down of the Holy Spirit when the priest, standing “in persona” of Christ speaks the words of consecration,
“TAKE THIS ALL OF YOU AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU”
And
“TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.”
This is the Good News. For whenever we take part in this covenant, when we take the initiative and accept God’s love, we BECOME CHRIST.
In the First Reading from the prophet Isaiah, we understand the intent of the Lord to “gather nations of every language”. When we receive our Lord in the Eucharist, we become his Body. We are constantly being drawn to his Presence like a “magnet” draws a “metal conductor” to itself.
We are a people in exile, much like the Israelites in the desert, being drawn to Him. With a contrite heart, we recognize our waywardness and bring our “offering to the house of the Lord in clean vessels” Isaiah 66:20.
In the Gospel of Luke 13:22-30, Jesus warns us, that unless we spread the Good News in the manner described above, we will be standing “outside the door, waiting to come in.”
When and only when we come to a realization of this, can we fully understand our mission to “Go out to all the world and tell the Good News”!
