The disciples were real witnesses to the Ascension. In the second verse of our preparation hymn, One Sacrifice of Christ, we sing these beautiful words: “One gaze we lift above, where Love was drawn to heaven.” As God revealed himself through real deeds witnessed in the Old Testament, He continues revealing himself in New Testament events, such as the Ascension “where Love was drawn to heaven”, that we celebrate this weekend. From the first reading in the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus tells his disciples, “you will be my witnesses….to the ends of the earth”. From the Gospel Acclamation, “Go and teach all nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, until the end of the world,” and from the second reading from Hebrews, “He who made the promise is trustworthy,” we are reassured of Jesus’ promise of his love always remaining with us to give us courage to share that love with others.
With the Trinity, all that is past is still present, so today, will we hear and follow Jesus’ command to be witnesses, sharing His love?
