The gospel acclamation for this Sunday sung by the cantor is from Matthew 11:29:
Take my yoke upon you, says the Lord, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.
To be meek and humble is not easy for us musicians who often thrive on performing and pleasing others with our music. In music ministry, the role of the musician is different. Instead of performing for an audience and receiving applause, the role is to perform a ministry. When singing hymns and Mass parts, those who are leading the assembly, should be sensitive to the voice of the assembly. This ministry requires the active participation of all who gather as the Body of Christ. The primary choir in the Catholic church is the assembly. We are all members of Christ’s Body. We serve in the capacity that we are served.
