There are so many great hymns invoking the Holy Spirit. What better way is there to call forth the Spirit than to sing these treasured hymns. Among them is the Pentecost Sequence. As you listen to this hymn of joy “Come, O Holy Spirit”, set to this well- known tune by Beethoven, I offer this reflection. Indeed, we need the Spirit to:
Comfort us when we are plagued with worry, doubt, anxiety, fear, and frustration
Draw us away from our work to quiet moments of living in the present moment with wonder and awe at what and who surrounds us
Shine through when we try to be our best selves, when we be Christ to one another
Heal our every fault
Turn our stubbornness and rigidness into open mindedness and sensitivity, and even bending a little, but not breaking
Melt the frozen (We know about this in Wyoming- with our recent storm) and warm the chill (how beautiful that we can see, and feel this taking place all around us as we transition from winter to spring and eventually summer- and as we too become alive with the promise of spring and summer)
Guide us when we run off course to draw us back into the circle of life that was so beautifully bestowed on us in baptism
Shower us with his many gifts, and the greatest gift of all, our salvation in Christ
