Ah! the breath of the Holy Spirit! Let us think about the grace each breath provides. The divine Breath finds it dwelling in our hearts with perfect love. The love of this breath quells and relieves all fears. The breath the Holy Spirit is present always but is imaginative and creative. To one it brings holiness, to another justice and integrity, to some freedom from bondage, to another it brings light in the darkest times. The breath of the Holy Spirit allows one to acknowledgement and the call to action. Indeed the breath of the Holy Spirit is alive and always present especially in the baptismal water and in Word and Eucharist. The hymn “O Breath on Me, O Breath of God” sung at most Masses this weekend on this solemn feast of Pentecost, reflects on the breath of the Holy Spirit. It is to the tune ST. COLUMBA and written by Edwin Hatch (1835-1889).
