Open My Eyes, Lord, help me to see your face. These are the opening words of the hymn written by Jesse Manisbusan. Where do we see God’s face? We see God’s face is one another. We see God’s face is the eyes of a child. We see God’s face in our spouse, our brother or sister, our neighbor, our co-worker, in the elderly, in the sick, in the dying, in the poor, the homeless, the abandoned and the forgotten.
But, we also see God’s face in the Eucharistic bread when the priest elevates the precious body and blood at Mass. We are amazed at the grace that overwhelms us, that strengthens us, that transforms us. In all of these, we need to pay attention and be grateful offering our praise and worship to God. For God is enlightening us with his never- ending love and sacrifice. We are invited to enter into it. Let us gaze on the face of Christ when we are feeling alone, discouraged, blinded and afraid. May our shortcomings remind us that we need God’s grace and feel content in the presence of one who was sent to redeem us and make us whole.
