Reflections on the Rite for the Blessing and Sprinkling of Water
During this Easter season, the Rite for the Blessing and Sprinkling of Water will invariably replace the penitential rite at weekend Masses in the cathedral. During the sprinkling rite, the hymn “River of Glory” by Dan Schutte or another appropriate hymn or chant will be sung by the assembly. Here is the music below.

The text of River of Glory is based on Antiphon 4 used during Easter Time in the Roman Missal , pg. 1299
O Chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, proclaim the mighty works of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light, alleluia. (1 Peter 2:9)
As the seasons change from winter to spring, and as we work in our yards and explore the outdoors, we are most keenly aware of the life that is blooming all around us. This new life is what this Easter season is all about. Jesus Christ has released us from our sins and draws us to himself. This sprinkling, done frequently in this Easter season, renews us each time. Once again, we are reborn and made new. Our response is a contrite heart and the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Penance and Eucharist are our saving grace that leads us back to Christ. In recognition of our own sinfulness, we can become more easily forgive the sins of others and become “repair agents” for each other. When we work with each other, instead of against each other, we can achieve great and marvelous things.
