13th Station: The Body of Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross Reflection on “Lift High the Cross”
Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name.
Led on their way by this triumphant sign, The hosts of God in conquering ranks combine.
Each newborn servant of the Crucified Bears on the brow the seal of him who died.
O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, As thou hast promised, draw the world to thee.
So shall our song of triumph ever be: Praise to the Crucified for victory!
I’m tempted to say that this is in the top 10 (20, anyway) all-time great hymns. The tune, by Sydney Nicholson, is rousing and victorious. And what victory are we celebrating? The cross. Not the empty tomb of Easter, but the cross. I know the resurrection is important, but I’ve often felt that Good Friday is at the center of our belief, since that is when our salvation was won. As He dies, Christ says, “It is finished,” and I think at that point the battle was won. Would we still be saved if there were no Easter? Let the theologians decide that, but I almost feel like it’s a demonstration to the world that He had not been vanquished – a victory lap, if you will. So this vibrant hymn DOES belong in Lent, a penitential season, but including the pinnacle of our faith, the great triumph of the cross. _June Bowser, cantor, private voice instructor and soloist
