“Light shines through the darkness for the upright” Psalm 112: 4-5 The cantor this Sunday in the first stanza of the responsorial psalm will proclaim these words. Who are the upright? The psalm defines the upright as those who are gracious and merciful and just. We are asked to be gracious in our giving, especially during this period of time dedicated to the communion for mission campaign in our diocese. We are asked to be gracious, not only in our contributions, but the affection we have for others. Are we willing to speak out in a peaceful manner for the injustices that occur in our world? Do we show mercy to others by treating those who wrong us with love? Do we acknowledge those who have shown mercy on us? May these days before Lent be a time where we can prepare our hearts for a fruitful Lent, by recognizing the urgent message to reform our lives that they may be more in accordance with that of Christ where we fall short.
