Is there a spiritual connection with this secular holiday weekend? I tend to believe “yes” considering that we toil each day in doing God’s work and we look forward to the day when we can rest from our labors to enjoy eternity with God. What a magnificent eternity awaits us!
As a kid, I associated Labor Day weekend with the Jerry Lewis telethon, the start of school, football and enjoying the outdoors with family, whether that be for a trip to the mountains or an outdoor picnic. The spiritual connection for me is to recognize the benefit of contributing a small amount to benefit those in need, enjoying the beauty of God’s creation, and spending time with the people whom God has placed in our lives. We call these people family. They are our support system through all the toil and tribulations that life brings.
Let us be a people of hope as we end one season and begin another, and as we move in the liturgy to focus on the cross, the Triumph of the Cross, and the healing presence of Christ in our lives.
