Colossians 3:15-16 Let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
One thing here that jumps out at me is the word “control.” While it’s hard to know just what Christ wants us to do sometimes, if “the word of Christ dwell(s) in you richly,” we are promised that our hearts will be under His control. The hymn Christ Be Beside Me (St. Patrick’s Breastplate) talks of Christ beside me, before me, behind me, on my right and left, even in my sleeping. If this is so, then our words and actions are going to come from Him. I also notice that this passage refers to gratitude twice. I think that must be key to having Him in control. So the formula for being an instrument of Christ seems to be gratitude and the word of God in our hearts. -June Bowser, cantor, soloist and voice instructor
