Selecting Music for Worship Part 2: The Pastoral Judgment
We continue our series on judging the qualities of music for the Liturgy, as we examine “The Pastoral Judgment”.
The Pastoral Judgement from “
Sing to the Lord” document 130-133 takes into consideration the actual community gathered to celebrate in a particular place, at a particular time. There are three questions to be asked:
Does a musical composition promote the sanctification of the members of the liturgical assembly by drawing them closer to the holy mysteries…..?
Does it strengthen their formation in faith by opening their hearts and summoning them to celebrate?
Is it capable of expressing the faith that God has planted in their hearts?
Is this composition technically, aesthetically, and expressively worthy?
We must also consider other factors, such as:age, culture, language, and education of a given liturgical assembly.
At the Cathedral of St. Mary, we provide and welcome the use of various styles of music as an aide to worship.
On Pentecost Sunday, there will be a mix of many various styles. Here is the link to the music presented on the weekend of May 19
