GIRM 42: After the entire liturgical assembly has been gathered, an entrance chant or song is sung as the procession with the priest, deacon, and ministers enter the church. “The purpose of this chant is to open the celebration, foster the unity of those who have been gathered, introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical season or festivity, and accompany the procession of the priest and ministers.”
The Entrance hymn unites as one body of Christ to celebrate the sacred mysteries that prepares us for eternity, but sets us in the present moment to be Christ to one another. With this idea in mind, we recognize that the entrance hymn is not merely to be travel music for the priest and ministers.
At the Cathedral of St. Mary, we have a treasure of entrance hymns that can achieve its purpose well. Whether it be a familiar classical tune, a simple antiphon, a hymn with a familiar tune to an unfamiliar text or a vivacious contemporary hymn, it will aide us in preparing to worship well!
